Emily As the Chicken's Head Went With the Bow
Darren C. Demaree

I was engaged
with the personification
of a neighbor's chicken

& when Emily, always
circling simple beauty
was asked to care

for the speckled bird
it was my idea
that we name it

something gallant.
The chicken took the ceremony
too seriously

& escaping the compound,
attacked the dogs
with great belief.

The chicken was brave
& eaten.  Emily was so angry
that she renamed me

something un-heroic.
